Serviceberry – Autumn Brilliance

“Amelanchier Grandiflora”
Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry is a popular choice for adding interest and beauty to home landscapes due to its three-season interest. In spring it is covered in brilliant white flowers that give way to a dark green foliage in the late spring and summer and then to a show-stopping bright red in the fall. Its edible berries attract wildlife and this tree can be placed anywhere in the landscape. It reaches a mature height of 15′ – 20′ with a mature spread of 15′ quite rapidly and is very adaptable to a range of soils and condiitons. Hearty in zones 4 – 9 with excellent disease resistance.

Additional Attributes

Due to its shrub-like structure, the Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry works well along property lines as a privacy screen. It is also common to plant the Serviceberry in the front or back landscape as an accent to a patio, deck, or side of the house. Plant in full sun to part shade and moist but well-drained soil.

Lilac – Ivory Silk

“Syringa Reticulata”
The Ivory Silk Lilac Tree grows to a height of 20-25′ and a spread of 15-25′. A young pyramid shape gives way to a more rounded shape as it grows. Fairly drought tolerant once the tree is established. Profuse blooms of large, 8-10 inch, creamy-white fragrant flowers emerge in late June or early July. Tolerant of urban settings including parking lots or boulevard plantings. Best flowering occurs in full sun, but also tolerant of part shade. Prefers loose, well-drained soil, adaptable to PH levels.

Additional Attributes

The bark is reddish-brown and looks attractive all year round. Lingering flower clusters create three-season interest. The fragrance is closer to a Privet than a typical lilac. Grows well in zones 3 – 6.

Dogwood – Pagoda

Delicate white flowers in spring give way to blue fruit and attractive red colored leaves in the fall season. Truly a beautiful addition to the landscape, it’s horizontally tiered branching structure reminds of an Asian garden.

Additional Attributes

The Pagoda Dogwood is very versatile in any landscape, providing both privacy and accent. Perfect for planting in beds around the house or on property lines. Also makes for a great focal point in the yard. This tree is best planted 10 feet away from buildings. A very tolerant tree it can grow well in any conditions. Hearty in zone 5.

Redbud – Eastern

“Cercis Canadensis”
The Eastern Redbud Tree is a popular ornamental tree producing delicate pink-purple flowers in early spring. It will reach a mature height of 20′ – 25′ with an equal spread at a moderate to a rapid pace. Benefits from a sheltered location protected from harsh winds. Green heart-shaped leaves give way to yellow leaves in the fall. Once established, the Eastern Redbud Tree develops an interesting character with twisting, open branching. Hearty in zones 4 – 9.

Additional Attributes

Often planted as an accent tree closer to the house or off a porch it adds color and texture to the landscape. The Eastern Redbud is adaptable to many soil conditions including acidic, alkaline, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, well-drained, and clay soils. Does well in the sun and part shade.

Hawthorn – Thornless Cockspur

The Thornless Cockspur Hawthorne makes an attractive garden accent in the fall with its bright red-orange, persistent fruit. It is a good four-season plant with a wide, angular branching habit and white, flat fowers in spring. It grows to an average height of 20-30′ with a spread of 20-35′ at a slow to medium rate. It is native to the midwest. Plant in front of evergreens for a dramatic effect.

Additional Attributes

The fruit of the Thornless Cockspur Hawthorne attracts birds and its foliage is dark green turning to bronze-red to purple-red in the fall. Hearty in zones 4-7. Best planted in full sunlight.
