Watering Instructions

Trees on average need roughly 2″ of water every two weeks during the growing season (from when buds appear until the leaves fall off).

We recommend watering on the 1st and 15th of the month – it is easy to remember that way

  • Go to the local hardware store and purchase a cheap rain gauge. (about $3)
  • Keep an eye on how much water “Mother Nature” is putting on the tree
  • If there isn’t any rainfall, get your garden hose and lay it directly at the truck of the tree before you go to bed
  • Get a small stream out of the hose about the diameter of a #2 pencil lead (barely a stream…almost a drip)
  • 6-8 hours later, turn off the water. This is the equivalent of 2″ of rain.

You want to water thoroughly…but infrequently!

  • Gives the tree deep, healthy roots
  • If you water too frequently, the roots remain near the surface because they are used to getting water all the time. (The deeper you go in the ground, the more moisture there is for the tree roots)
  • If we get on inch of rain in a two week period, water for 3-4 hours.

You only need to do this the first growing season to ensure a deep, healthy root system develops.

However, if we experience a drought, you can implement this procedure with any tree in your yard at any time.

The benefits of watering this way

  • Requires very little attention
  • Virtually no difference in your water bill
  • If you water on the 1st and the 15th of the month, it is very easy to remember.
